From Steam Trains to Space Shuttle in Ten Miles

Desolate, windswept plains, just north of Utah’s Great Salt Lake, are home to wildly contrasting highlights in American History. Rising from the stark landscape along Route 83 are the eerie bunkers and massive research buildings where solid rocket propulsion systems are developed and tested by ATK Aerospace.

Less than ten miles away from the business end of a Space Shuttle booster rocket display, is the Golden Spike National Historical Site, commemorating the 1869 completion of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad, at Promontory Summit. More Americana is in store when I visit rustic Park City, Utah and the High West Distillery this afternoon.
