Whistling Straits Golf Club, Kohler, WI

Images of the Machrie course, hard by Laggan Bay on Islay, Scotland crowded my mind as I approached The Straits Club House, just outside Kohler, WI on the shores of Lake Michigan. The moody sky, threatening but not delivering, the windswept dunes surrounding the area, and what seemed like a relentless wind, all made this visit a wonderful trip down memory lane. Site of the 2010 PGA Championship, The Straits Course is one of two, the other being The Irish Course, designed by Pete Dye. After the 18th hole, (named Dyeabolical!), I enjoyed the perfect malt for the occasion: an Aberlour A’bunadh. The 100% aging only in Oloroso sherry butts, with no chill filtration, provided the perfect, reflective dram for the magnificent surroundings and the mental return to Machrie and Islay.
