A chic calm permeates the entire experience that is Café Pinot. Located downtown on 5th Street, next to the LA Central library, the word “oasis” comes to mind. Spectacularly vibrant cityscape views, dominated by the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, are tempered by the tasteful and abundant landscaping in and around the outdoor, umbrelled patio. When dining indoors, most of the views are of the tranquil patio area.
For this evening’s dinner, we are a party of five first-time diners at Café Pinot, all interested in pairing single malt Scotches with our meals. Finishing our exquisitely prepared and served dinners, we review our whisky selections and agree that the abundant two-dozen offered expressions provided something for each of us:
Glenkinchie 10 and ravioli with homemade ricotta cheese with wild mushroom ragout
Glenlivet 18 with leek-crusted salmon, Yukon gnocchi, scallions and onion soubise
Glenmorangie 10 with rotisserie chicken, Dijon mustard glaze, and Pinot fries
Glenfiddich 12 and Fuji apple salad, wild arugula, blue cheese, candied walnuts, and figs
Talisker 10 with the bone-in ribeye “cote de boeuf”, fingerling potatoes, shallots, smoked salt and broccolini
With hearty whiskies from Islay and the Western Highlands of Scotland still waiting to be paired with delectable menu selections, our little group is looking forward to further “research”.
